Which Nepal trek is right for you? The short version

Four treks dominate the "which one should I book" question. They are genuinely different trips, not tiers of the same trip, and the right answer depends on what you want rather than on which is hardest.

Want a high pass and changing landscapesAnnapurna Circuit: you are on the right site
Want a glacial amphitheatre, shorter tripAnnapurna Base Camp
Want the famous name and the KhumbuEverest Base Camp
Want solitude and a restricted areaManaslu Circuit

We run all four. That means we have no reason to talk you into the wrong one. See our editorial policy on how we handle that conflict of interest.

The four treks compared

Annapurna Circuit5,416 m · 8–11 days · pass crossing · teahouse · no flights needed
Annapurna Base Camp4,130 m · 7–14 days · valley in-and-out · teahouse · no flights needed
Everest Base Camp5,364 m · 12–16 days · valley in-and-out · teahouse · Lukla flights
Manaslu Circuit5,106 m · 14–18 days · pass crossing · restricted permit · remote

The headline difference is shape. The Annapurna and Manaslu Circuits are loops that cross a high pass and come down somewhere else. Annapurna Base Camp and Everest Base Camp walk up a valley and come back the same way. That changes the variety of what you see far more than the altitude figures suggest.

Annapurna Circuit vs Annapurna Base Camp

The two most confused treks in Nepal, because they share a name and a mountain range. They are not similar.

Annapurna CircuitCircles the massif. 5,416 m at Thorong La. Passes through subtropical valley, alpine Manang, and the arid Tibetan-influenced Mustang. 8–11 days. Harder.
Annapurna Base CampWalks into the Sanctuary, a glacial amphitheatre ringed by peaks. 4,130 m. One valley, one climate, rhododendron forest throughout. 7–14 days. More accessible.

Choose the Circuit if you want a pass crossing, real landscape change, and do not mind two-plus weeks. Choose Base Camp ifyou have 10 days, want to stand surrounded by 7,000 m walls, or are less certain about high altitude: 4,130 m is a materially smaller ask than 5,416 m.

The Sanctuary is a genuinely different experience: you finish standing in a bowl with mountains on every side, rather than crossing a pass and descending the other side. If that is the picture in your head, book our Annapurna Base Camp trek instead of this one.

Both start from Pokhara, both use teahouses, and both need only the ACAP permit and TIMS card.

Annapurna Circuit vs Everest Base Camp

The two treks people most often choose between when booking their one big Himalayan trip.

Annapurna Circuit5,416 m. Wide cultural and landscape variety. No mandatory flights: road access at both ends. Generally cheaper. Quieter than Khumbu.
Everest Base Camp5,364 m. The name, the Khumbu icefall, Sherpa culture, Kala Patthar. Requires the Lukla flight, which weather cancels. Busier and more expensive.

The altitudes are nearly identical, so this is not a difficulty decision. It is a decision about what you want to have seen.

Everest gives you the mountain everyone has heard of and the culture of the Khumbu, at the price of a flight that can strand you at either end and a trail that carries far more people. The Circuit gives you more variety. You walk through several climate zones and two distinct cultural regions, with no flight dependency and usually a lower total cost.

If the name is the point, and it legitimately is for many people, book our Everest Base Camp trek.

Annapurna Circuit vs Manaslu Circuit

The closest comparison on this page. Both are true circuits crossing a high pass.

Annapurna CircuitThorong La, 5,416 m. Well-developed teahouses, good food, reliable connectivity, more trekkers. Standard ACAP and TIMS permits.
Manaslu CircuitLarke La, 5,106 m. Restricted-area permit and a licensed guide required by law. Basic teahouses, far fewer people, more remote feel.

Manaslu is what the Annapurna Circuit was two decades ago: quieter, rougher, less comfortable, and for some people better because of it. The trade-off is real: fewer teahouse options, less reliable food and charging, and a genuine sense of being a long way from help.

Choose Annapurna for comfort, variety and accessibility. Choose our Manaslu Circuit trek for solitude, if you have trekked in Nepal before and want somewhere with fewer boots on it.

Annapurna Circuit vs Kilimanjaro

A question we get often, usually from people choosing their first big mountain trip.

Kilimanjarois a single summit push, 5,895 m over 6–9 days, non-technical, camping on most routes, and a compressed ascent profile that makes altitude illness common. You are on a mountain, not among people.

The Annapurna Circuit is a journey of two weeks or more, sleeping in villages, crossing a pass rather than summiting, with a far more gradual ascent profile and a strong cultural dimension.

If you want a summit and have a week, Kilimanjaro. If you want to travel through a place, and you have the leave, the Circuit. And your acclimatisation will be considerably better on it. See our altitude sickness guide for why ascent rate matters more than final altitude.

Can you combine treks?

Yes, with enough time. Common combinations:

  • Circuit + Tilicho Lake, not a second trek but a second high objective inside this one, at 10 days.
  • Circuit + the high lakes, Green, Blue, Ice and Tilicho, on the 11-day lakes route.
  • Circuit + Annapurna Base Camp, around four weeks, and the two treks share the Pokhara and Ghorepani approach.
  • Two trips, two seasons, honestly the better plan for most people than one exhausting month.

All our treks across the four regions are run by the same team. See all our Nepal treks.

FAQ

Which is harder, the Annapurna Circuit or Everest Base Camp?
They are close. EBC's maximum is 5,364 m against the Circuit's 5,416 m. The Circuit is longer and crosses a pass in one big day; EBC involves a longer sustained period at high altitude and the Lukla flight. Neither is technical.
Is the Annapurna Circuit the same as Annapurna Base Camp?
No. The Circuit loops the whole massif and crosses Thorong La at 5,416 m over 8–11 days. Base Camp walks into the Annapurna Sanctuary at 4,130 m and back out, typically in 7–14 days.
Which is cheapest?
Annapurna Base Camp is usually the cheapest, being shortest. Everest Base Camp is usually the most expensive because of the Lukla flights. The Annapurna and Manaslu Circuits sit between, with Manaslu pushed up by the restricted-area permit.
Which is best for a first-time trekker?
Annapurna Base Camp if you have around 10 days; the 11-day Annapurna Circuit lakes route if you have longer and want a high pass with far more acclimatisation built in.
Can I do the Annapurna Circuit without flying internally?
Yes, road access at both ends. That is a real advantage over Everest Base Camp, where a cancelled Lukla flight can cost days at either end.
